The value test

Subtract before you add.

Step one

Count only benefits you would buy anyway.

A $300 credit is worth $300 only if it applies to purchases already in your plan. Lounge access, hotel status and concierge services should receive a conservative personal value—not the issuer’s headline number.

Effective fee

$195 after a fully used $300 credit

That is the real hurdle for the remaining benefits and incremental rewards.

Break-even question

Will rewards and access beat $195?

If not, choose a lower-fee card and keep the difference.
