Lisbon on $100 a Day: Where to Sleep, Eat, and Ride

Lisbon is still one of Europe's best-value capitals — if you know where the money leaks.

Why Lisbon still works on a budget

Lisbon has gotten pricier since 2022, but it's still cheaper than Paris or Amsterdam. A decent hotel room runs €90–€130 in the shoulder months. Dinner with wine at a neighborhood tasca costs €15–€20. The trick is avoiding the tourist-taxed strip between Baixa and Alfama. Base yourself in Estrela, Campo de Ourique, or Arroios and you'll pay 30% less for the same quality. October is ideal: 22°C days, fewer crowds, and hotel rates drop 20–25% from August peaks.

Where to sleep for under €100

Skip the boutique hotels in Chiado. Look at guesthouses in Príncipe Real and Arroios — expect €75–€95 for a double with breakfast. The Lisbon Destination Hostel inside Rossio station is surprisingly good at €35 for a private twin. Book directly with small guesthouses; many offer 10% off for cash or direct booking. Avoid Airbnb in Alfama — cleaning fees and minimum stays eat the savings.

Eat well without the tourist markup

A pastel de nata at Manteigaria costs €1.20. At the tourist traps near Praça do Comércio, €2.50. Same pastry. Lunch at a tasca — look for the daily prato do dia — runs €8–€10 with soup, bread, and coffee. Time Out Market is fun but pricey; go once for the experience, then eat local. Campo de Ourique market has better value. Dinner for two with vinho verde: €30–€40 at places like Tasca do Chico in Bairro Alto (go early, it's tiny).

Getting around: trams, metro, and the 24-hour pass

A single metro ride is €1.85 with the Viva Viagem card (€0.50 for the card itself). The 24-hour pass costs €6.80 and covers metro, buses, and funiculars — worth it if you're doing three or more rides. Tram 28 is iconic but packed; ride it at 7am or skip it and take tram 25 instead, which hits many of the same viewpoints with half the crowd. Sintra day trip: train from Rossio is €4.80 round trip.

Free and cheap things that are actually good

Most museums are free on the first Sunday of the month — including the Tile Museum and Berardo Collection. The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte has the best view in the city and costs nothing. Walk the Alfama stairs early morning before the tour groups arrive. LX Factory is free to wander; brunch there is €12–€15. For fado, skip the €50 dinner shows and hit a bar in Mouraria where a glass of wine gets you a seat and a song.

Sample $100 day

Guesthouse double: €85 (split with a partner = €42.50). Breakfast included. Morning: pastel de nata and coffee, €2.50. Tram 28 at 7am, €3.10. Lunch tasca: €9. Afternoon: free museum (first Sunday) or walk the riverfront. Dinner: €18 with wine. Metro home: €1.85. Total: roughly €77 per person — under $100 even with the current exchange rate. Add a €6.80 transit pass on heavy days and you're still on budget.
