Skip Alfama for Sleeping
Alfama is beautiful and terrible for sleep. The lanes are loud until 1 a.m., taxis can't reach most doors, and you'll haul luggage up cobbles. Stay in Estrela or Campo de Ourique instead. A clean double room at a small guesthouse there runs €95–€120 ($103–$130) in October 2026. You're a 10-minute Uber (€7) from the center and surrounded by actual residents. If you want nightlife, Príncipe Real works — just book a room facing the courtyard, not the street.
The Tram 28 Trick
Everyone queues at Martim Moniz for Tram 28 and waits 45 minutes. Walk 15 minutes uphill to Graça and board at the Largo da Graça stop — same route, usually a seat, no queue. A single ride is €3.20 on board, but a 24-hour Carris pass is €6.80 and covers trams, buses, and the funiculars. Buy it at any metro machine. Do not buy from the driver unless you enjoy paying double.
Where to Eat Without the Queue
The €25 seafood rice on Rua Augusta is fine. The €12 version at Tasca do Chico in Bairro Alto is better. For lunch, hit the Príncipe Real market on Saturdays — a bifana sandwich and a glass of vinho verde costs €8. Time Out Market is worth one visit for the spectacle, but locals eat at the counter at O Trevo near Chiado: €6 for a bifana, €2 for a beer, standing room only. Dinner for two with wine at a neighborhood tasca in Campo de Ourique: €45–€55.
The Day Trip That Actually Saves Money
Sintra is mobbed by 11 a.m. Go on a weekday, take the 8:11 train from Rossio (€4.80 round trip, 40 minutes), and head straight to Quinta da Regaleira before 9:30. Entry is €15. By noon, when the tour buses arrive, you're on a bus to Praia Grande for a €9 grilled fish lunch and an empty beach. Back in Lisbon by 6 p.m. Total day cost per person: about €35.
What a Real Day Costs
Here's a realistic budget for one person, October 2026: guesthouse double split two ways €55, Carris 24-hour pass €6.80, coffee and pastel de nata €2.50, bifana lunch €8, museum entry (Gulbenkian is free on Sundays) €0–€14, dinner with wine €25, one beer €3. That's €100–€115 ($108–$124) — under $150 with room to spare. Add a €20 splurge for a fado bar in Mouraria and you're still fine.
Book Direct, Skip the Platform Fee
Lisbon guesthouses pay 15–18% commission to booking platforms. Email the property directly, mention the dates, and ask for their best rate — most will knock off 8–10% or throw in breakfast. I saved €22 on a three-night stay in Estrela this way in September 2026. Book flights on a Tuesday or Wednesday for October travel; fares from the U.S. East Coast hovered around $520 round trip on TAP when I checked last week.
