Why Porto Is Your Next Budget-Friendly Escape

Porto, Portugal's second city, offers a mix of history, wine, and stunning architecture at prices that won't break the bank. A day here can cost as little as $70 if you know where to go. I spent a week in Porto and found that even with port tastings and tram rides, my daily spend rarely exceeded that. The city is walkable, and the food is affordable. Plus, the port wine is world-class. If you're looking for a European getaway that feels authentic and won't drain your wallet, Porto should be at the top of your list.

Start Your Day with a Pastel de Nata and Coffee

Begin at Manteigaria (Rua de Santa Catarina 331) for a warm pastel de nata (€1.20) and a bica (espresso, €0.80). Total: €2. That's $2.20. Compare that to a $6 latte in Paris. The creamy custard tart with a flaky crust is the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. Grab a spot at the standing counter and watch the bakers work. If you want a sit-down breakfast, try Casa Guedes (Praça Guilherme Gomes Fernandes 58) for a pork sandwich (€3.50) that locals swear by.

Ride the Historic Trams for Cheap

Porto's tram system is a budget-friendly way to see the city. Line 1 runs along the Douro River from Ribeira to Foz, offering gorgeous views for €3.50 one-way. A day pass on the tram is €6.50, but if you're only doing one or two rides, pay as you go. Line 18 climbs up to the Jardim do Morro for panoramic views. Tip: Buy your ticket from the driver, but have exact change. Avoid the hop-on-hop-off buses; they cost €20 and aren't as charming.

Port Tasting Without the Tourist Markup

You can't visit Porto without tasting port. Skip the expensive tours in Gaia and head to Vinologia (Rua de São João 28) in Ribeira. A tasting flight of three ports starts at €12. Or, cross the Luís I Bridge to Gaia and visit Kopke (Sogevinus) for a tour and tasting from €10. My favorite: Quinta do Noval's tasting room in Gaia offers a 3-port flight for €15. That's $16. If you're on a tight budget, many wine shops offer free tastings with purchase. Just ask.

Lunch Like a Local for Under €10

For lunch, head to the Mercado do Bolhão (Rua Formosa) for fresh produce and cheap eats. Try a bifana (pork sandwich) at Conga (Rua do Bonjardim 314) for €3.50. Or grab a francesinha, Porto's iconic sandwich, at Café Santiago (Rua de Passos Manuel 226) for €9.50. It's huge and comes with fries. If you want lighter fare, the Time Out Market (Av. de Sá da Bandeira 72) has various stalls with dishes from €7. I had a delicious octopus salad there for €8.50.

Afternoon Views and Free Attractions

Walk off lunch with a stroll through the Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The colorful houses along the river are free to admire. Climb the Clérigos Tower (Rua de São Filipe de Nery) for €5 and get a 360-degree view of the city. Then, cross the upper deck of the Luís I Bridge for free and take in the best panorama of Porto. On the Gaia side, the Jardim do Morro offers a sunset spot that's unbeatable. Bring a bottle of wine (€5 from a supermarket) and enjoy.

Dinner and Drinks for €15

For dinner, try Taberna dos Mercadores (Rua dos Mercadores 36) for petiscos (small plates) like clams à Bulhão Pato (€8) and grilled sardines (€6). Or, go to Casa Guedes again for their famous pork sandwich (€3.50) and a beer (€1.50). For drinks, head to Galeria de Paris (Rua da Galeria de Paris) for lively bars with cheap drinks (€3-5). End your night with a glass of port at Prova (Rua da Alfândega 75) for €4. Total for dinner and drinks: about €15-20.

Where to Stay on a Budget

Accommodation in Porto is affordable. Hostels like Pilot Design Hostel (Rua de Cândido dos Reis 42) offer dorm beds from €15 per night. Private rooms in guesthouses start at €40. For a mid-range hotel, try Hotel Vera Cruz (Rua de Santa Catarina 128) with doubles from €60. If you're staying multiple days, consider an Airbnb in the Bonfim neighborhood for €50 per night. Book in advance for summer, as prices rise. My total daily spend: €2 breakfast + €3.50 tram + €12 port tasting + €8 lunch + €5 tower + €15 dinner = €45.50 (about $50). That leaves room for extras.
