Where to stay (and where not to)
Stay downtown near Robson and Burrard if you want to walk everywhere. The Blue Horizon Hotel runs about $220–$280 CAD per night in shoulder season and puts you two blocks from the seawall. For budget, the YWCA Hotel on Beatty Street is clean, central, and around $120–$150 CAD. Avoid hotels right on Granville Street if you're a light sleeper — the bar noise runs late. Book directly with the hotel when possible; many waive the resort fee that third-party sites tack on.
Day 1: Seawall, Stanley Park, and Granville Island
Start early — 7:30 a.m. — and rent a bike at Spokes on Denman Street ($12/hour or $35 for the day). Ride the seawall into Stanley Park before 9 a.m.; after that, the tour groups arrive. The full loop is 9 km and takes about an hour at an easy pace. Lock the bike and walk the Totem Poles and Prospect Point. For lunch, skip the park concessions and head to Granville Island via the Aquabus ($4.50 CAD one-way, 10 minutes). The Public Market is busy at noon; go at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. Get fish and chips at Go Fish (a small blue shack near the market) — about $16 CAD and worth the 15-minute wait.
Day 2: Grouse Mountain or Lynn Canyon
Grouse Mountain's Skyride costs about $75 CAD round-trip and gets crowded by 10 a.m. If you want the view without the price, take the free shuttle to Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge instead. It's free, less crowded, and the 30-foot pool below is swimmable in summer. If you do Grouse, buy tickets online the night before and arrive at opening (8:30 a.m.). The Grouse Grind hike is free but steep — 2.9 km with 2,830 stairs — and takes most people 60–90 minutes up. Take the Skyride down ($20 CAD) to save your knees.
Cheap eats that locals actually use
Japadog on Burrard (around $8 CAD) is a solid quick lunch. For sit-down, go to Phnom Penh in Chinatown — the chicken wings are famous and a plate runs about $15 CAD. Avoid the tourist-trap restaurants on Robson between Burrard and Denman; walk two blocks off the strip to Davie or Hamilton Street for better value. For coffee, Revolver in Gastown roasts in-house and a flat white is about $5 CAD.
Transit and the airport
Skip the taxi from YVR. The Canada Line SkyTrain takes 25 minutes to downtown and costs $9.45 CAD (including the $5 airport add-fare). A Compass Card isn't worth it for a weekend — just tap your credit card at the gate. Day passes are $11.25 CAD and pay off if you take three or more trips. Rideshare (Uber and Lyft) is available but surge pricing hits hard after 10 p.m. on weekends.
What to skip
Capilano Suspension Bridge charges $70+ CAD and is packed with tour buses. Lynn Canyon is free and 20 minutes farther by transit. The Vancouver Lookout at Harbour Centre ($18.50 CAD) is fine but the view from Queen Elizabeth Park is free and better on a clear day. Gastown's steam clock is a 30-second photo stop — don't plan a meal around it.
When to go
June through September is dry and warm (20–25°C), but hotel prices peak. Late September and early October are the sweet spot: still mild, fewer crowds, and rates drop 20–30%. Avoid July 1 (Canada Day) if you dislike crowds — downtown gets packed. Rain is real from November to March, so pack a waterproof shell, not an umbrella; locals use hoods on the seawall.
