How I Priced These
I pulled round-trip fares from New York, Boston, and Washington DC for November and early December 2026, then checked the median nightly rate for a 3-star central hotel on Booking.com. On-the-ground costs are my own from trips in the last 18 months, adjusted for 2026 prices. Every city below lands under $1,400 for four nights, flights included, if you book by early November.
1. Lisbon, Portugal — About $1,180
Round-trip from Newark on TAP runs $420 to $520 in late November. A clean double in Alfama or Baixa is $95 to $130 a night. A bifana sandwich costs $3.50, a glass of vinho verde $4, and a metro day pass $7.20. Skip the $30 taxi from the airport and take the red line for $2.10. The real move is flying in Tuesday and out Saturday — weekend fares jump 25%.
2. Budapest, Hungary — About $1,050
No nonstop from the US, but a $480 fare to Frankfurt plus a $60 hop on Ryanair or Wizz gets you there. Hotels in District VII average $80 a night. A bowl of goulash is $6, a ruin bar beer $2.50, and the thermal baths at Széchenyi cost $22 for a full day. The 100E airport bus is $6 and drops you at Deák Ferenc tér in 30 minutes.
3. Porto, Portugal — About $1,150
Slightly cheaper than Lisbon on the ground and less crowded in November. Flights connect through Lisbon or Madrid for $450 to $550. A guesthouse room in the Ribeira district runs $85 to $110. A francesinha — the city's gut-busting sandwich — is $9, port tastings in Vila Nova de Gaia start at $15, and the tram to Foz is $3.50. Book the Douro Valley train early; it sells out on weekends.
4. Krakow, Poland — About $980
The cheapest of the bunch. Fly into Warsaw for $430 to $500 and take the EIP train to Krakow for $30, or grab a $70 connection. Old Town hotels average $70 a night. Pierogi are $5, a museum ticket at Wawel Castle is $8, and a 24-hour transit pass is $4.50. November is cold — pack layers — but Christmas market season starts the last week of the month and hotel prices barely move.
5. Athens, Greece — About $1,250
Off-season Athens is a steal. Nonstop from JFK on Delta or Emirates runs $480 to $580 in November. A Plaka hotel is $90 to $120. Souvlaki is $4, an Acropolis ticket is $22, and the airport metro is $10. Ferries to Aegina run $30 round-trip if you want a day on the water without the island-hotel markup.
Booking Tips That Save $200+
Book flights on a Tuesday or Wednesday, 6 to 10 weeks out — that's the sweet spot for transatlantic fares in shoulder season. Set Google Flights alerts for your three target airports at once. For hotels, book refundable rates now and recheck two weeks before; November rates in these cities often drop 15%. And always price the train connection separately from the flight — bundling it into one booking usually costs more.
